what is LensCulture and a Photography competition?

LensCulture International Exposure Awards, now in their fifth year, are granted yearly to discover, reward, and promote talented, new, emerging and established photographers and multimedia creators from around the world.
Then as for the Awards Competition itself:
Our world exists in vibrant color but it was with black & white images that we first documented and responded to it through photography. More than a century and a half later, black and white photography continues to hold a prominent place in our hearts and imaginations. For this reason, LensCulture is thrilled to introduce our very first Black & White Photography Awards, a reflection of our own long-held love for the simplicity and evocative power of these images.
We’re on the hunt for compelling work that plays with the dynamic relationship between light and dark across all genres of photography. This competition aims to uncover incredible photographers from diverse backgrounds and experience levels, and connect them with global audiences and career-changing opportunities including an exhibition at Aperture Gallery in New York City in 2019!
Exhibition at Aperture Gallery in New York City you say? That does sound quite exciting! That’s not it though, winners can receive prize money, permanent exhibition feature on LensCulture’s online gallery, entry into all other future competitions, publishing in the next book volume of “The Best of LensCulture”, and screens in festivals literally all over the world; that’s all on top of the already awesome opportunity of an exhibition in NYC. Even if either submission ends up as an Editor Pick (Left to right highest spot attainable to lowest -> Podium Spots, 6 Finalists, 8 Jurors Picks, 25 Finalists, and lastly Editor’s Picks) that would be a huge benefit to not only myself but all my fellow In-Game Photographers thus far by it being a conduit for three million viewers to more work outside of just my own.
It’s of course without saying this could be and more than likely is - a long shot. Though In-Game Photography has been around for eight or nine years now (roughly), it goes through ebbs and flows of much praise to also quite heated criticism - even denunciation as a form of photography. So this competition opportunity might be no exception to this reality, December shall reveal which side of the pendulum my work will be received in. I’m known for being stubborn, so here it goes!
On a personal level, though I greatly appreciate and understand the importance of color photography in it’s numerous forms - I am a true lover of Black & White. If I could find it within myself to post process my in-game photography and my past years of work in digital and film.. I’d do it all in black & white. I personally believe it’s the most evocative form of photography. I find that it just hits you on an emotional level, sometimes scarcely and other times immensely. I also think black & white photography is an art form that is so effective at communicating a message or idea even long after the photographer has left this world. So needless to say, this competition hits close to home for me, and I’m very excited to participate in it.
But hey, maybe that’s just me I don’t know! What are your thoughts on black and white photography?
I’ve submitted two entries. One is in the single photos category and the other is in the 5+ single photos category.
The single photos category entry is called “Silent Corridor” a photograph taken in 2012 that was part of my initial exploration into screen photography. My 5+ single photos category entry is entitled “Explorations into a Virtual World” which encompasses more refined attempts at screen photography and also some shots from my project “A Distant Sadness”.
So why do I need your help? Well because ultimately these submissions are at the mercy of my friends, family, and the fine gentlemen and ladies of the In-Game Photography community! I need your help by sharing my submissions on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook and also favoriting the submissions on the links provided below over the course of November. Without this, they’ll still be judged but the lack of exposure will weigh on the decision ultimately made from my understanding.
This can be a great opportunity for exposure of not only my work but this beautiful form of photography and all of it’s participants. Video game art and these virtual worlds deserve to be appreciated by more than just video gamers; and the in-game photographers that create awe-inspiring photographs dedicated to celebrating this beautiful medium deserve to be seen. I’m hoping these two submissions can be my attempt, with your help, at introducing more of the world to In-Game Photography.
